 Salvation:  what does it mean?

By confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and by believing in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you are saved.  Believing with your heart leads to righteousness, and confessing with your mouth leads to salvation (Romans 10:9-10). To receive salvation means that you have been delivered from the penalty of sin.  Through this perfect  work of God in Christ, you are declared permanently saved and safe forever (John 5:24; 10:28, 29; Rom. 8:1, 37-39; 1 Pet. 1:3-5).  Upon the return of Jesus Christ, all believers will live for eternity in heaven with Him.

The ABCs of Salvation

A.  Admit that you have sinned.
Romans 3:23 (NKJV) For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
James 2:10 (NKJV) For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
Romans 3:10 (NKJV) As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one.
Romans 6:23 (NKJV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 John 1:9 (NKJV) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

B.  Believe on Jesus Christ
John 3:16 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Mark 1:15 (NKJV) The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.
Acts 19:4 (NKJV)Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
Acts 16:31 (NKJV) So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
1 John 3:23 (NKJV) And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the Name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

C.  Confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV) That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 1:16 (NKJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Please recite this prayer for salvation:
Heavenly Father, I come to you today as a sinner.  I believe that Jesus Christ is God, and I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead.  I am asking for salvation through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. I accept Him now as my personal Lord and Savior.  I am asking that you create in me a clean heart and renew within me a right spirit.   I pray that I will lead a new life that will glorify and honor you daily.  In the name of Jesus I thank you and praise you, Amen!

The Next Steps After Salvation

Congratulations on accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior!  You have passed over from the kingdom of darkness into the marvelous Light through Christ Jesus.  (1 Peter 2:9)  Your next steps are:

1. Read your Bible daily
The Holy Bible is God’s word.  It is your user’s manual for spiritual growth, development and discipline.  Set aside a quiet time each day to read God’s word.  Ask God to speak to you and to guide you as you study His word.

2. Pray daily
In addition to finding a daily quiet time period to study the bible, you will also need a daily quiet time period to pray to God.  Prayer is a way to speak to God.  Ask God to guide you through each day.  Share with God your concerns and needs.  Try to plan your day so that you pray as soon as you wake up and make prayer the last thing you do before going to bed.

3. Join a church where there is sound bible instruction and a new members class
Introduce yourself to the pastor.  Tell that pastor that you are a new believer.  Join the new members class and complete all assignments for the class.

4. Ask the church pastor to assign a person to mentor or disciple you as a new believer
It is important that you have a mature believer mentor or disciple you.  This is the person you  can call as often as needed to ask questions about your daily walk as a new believer.

5. Be baptized
Baptism does not save you.  Baptism is a public confession of a spiritual change in your life.  The act of being immersed in water publicly illustrates that you have been buried with Christ.  Coming out of the water symbolizes the resurrection of Christ.  By doing so, you are identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
